Debra Fetherman, Ph.D.

The Magis Award
Our signature faculty award, recognizing sustained excellence and innovation across teaching, scholarship, service, and mission—embodying reflection, discernment, care for the whole person, and a commitment to justice in the spirit of the magis. The recipient of this year’s award is Dr. Debra Fetherman.
Dr. Debra Fetherman is Program Director of Public Health and Chair of the Department of Health and Human Performance but perhaps no title captures her contribution to the university better than the one she has held since 2021: Community-Based Learning Faculty Coordinator. In that role, and through her decade of service on the CBL Advisory Board before it, Dr. Fetherman has been an essential part of embedding community-engaged learning into the fabric of academic life at Scranton. She has led faculty workshops, supported colleagues across the university in integrating CBL into their courses, secured grant funding for her community partnerships, and served as first author on an in-press publication in Jesuit Higher Education: A Journal documenting the CBL Faculty Fellows Program she developed and implemented. She also plays a central role in LCHS’s TAPESTRY program, introducing first-year students to Jesuit values and leading seniors in discernment about how those values will shape their professional lives going forward.
In addition to her work on campus, Dr. Fetherman's has nurtured a partnership with Saint Joseph's Center, a Catholic organization in our community serving individuals with intellectual disabilities, a commitment to the community that puts into practice the very work that she promotes as part of CBL on campus. Dr. Fetherman exemplifies what the Magis asks of us: not merely doing more, but striving for greater depth, greater integration, and greater service to others.
